Concerts

Welcome to a new season of music at St. Paul’s. From the time of Walter Blodgett and forward to the present, fine music has played its part in forming the voice of our faith and of the wider community. St. Paul’s has hosted countless concerts, recitals, and special events, and has been a leader in liturgical music through its choirs and instruments.

Kevin Jones

Director of Music
Kevin Jones began formal musical training at the age of four. He attended Southern Methodist University and completed his undergraduate degree in organ performance at Ashland College (now University). Mr. Jones went on to earn graduate degrees in Collaborative Piano and in Organ Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He also holds the Master of Science in Education degree in Human Services from the University of Dayton.
From 1996 to 2004, Jones held the post of Musical Director/Conductor of the New York City based Gilbert & Sullivan ensemble, the Blue Hill Troupe, Ltd. With that ensemble he made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut as guest with Skitch Henderson’s New York Pops Symphony Orchestra. While on the East Coast, he was in demand as a conductor and collaborative artist, appearing frequently with soloists and ensembles throughout the region. He has worked as assistant to conductor Anton Coppola in productions of Aïda, Gianni Schicchi, La Bohème, Lucia, Le Nozze di Figaro, and Rigoletto. He appeared with regularity at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall with Mid-America Productions, and made his Weill Recital Hall début with flutist Koaki Fujimoto. He has performed at Ashland University, Cleveland Museum of Art, Oberlin College, Merkin Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Purchase, and Weill Hall. Internationally, he has performed throughout Europe and the Far East, most recently playing a solo recital in the 11th-century St. Mary’s Church in Helsingborg, Sweden. Jones also performed on the Pipes at One series at St. Paul’s Chapel, New York City, in 2019.
Following positions in Hartford, Connecticut, Westchester County, New York, and New York City, Jones was Minister of Music at First Congregational Church, Columbus, from 2013 to 2022 where he directed a large music program of four choirs and the longstanding series Concerts at First Church. He led the First Church Choir in choral residencies at Lincoln, Norwich, Gloucester, Chichester, and Winchester Cathedrals, U.K. In June of 2022, Jones was appointed Director of Music at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Cleveland Heights.

Lois Bell

Handbell Choir Director

Lois has been a church musician for nearly forty years, directing and performing in both vocal and bell choirs. She recently retired from teaching music for 25 years in the Willoughby-Eastlake Schools. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Bucknell University and a Master of Music Education degree from Kent State University. Other interests include ballroom dancing, activities with her daughter and travel, especially to visit her son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren in Chicago.

Daniel Colaner

Organ Scholar

Daniel is the Organ Scholar at St. Paul’s and is currently a student of Todd Wilson's at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Daniel Colaner captured international media attention at the age of 12 with his same-day performances on piano at Carnegie Hall and on organ at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Since then, his talents have been showcased on ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, The Harry Connick Jr. Show, and the BBC World Service Newsday.

He has been featured on the NPR radio show From the Top (Show #377), performing "Jupiter" from Gustav Holst’s The Planets, and on PBS, performing Doxology Variations with the American Pops Orchestra in One Voice: The Songs We Share—The Sacred. This past spring, he performed Joseph Jongen’s Symphonie Concertante with the CIM Orchestra under Carlos Kalmar. In 2021, he was chosen for The Diapason magazine’s "20 Under 30," a select group of young adults at the forefront of the organ field. He was a 2023 National YoungArts Finalist in Organ/ Classical Music and the recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award in 2020. Most recently, he was the 1st Prize and Audience Prize Winner at the 2023 Arthur Poister Organ Competition and the 2023 L. Cameron Johnson Memorial Organ Competition. Additional honors include 1st Prize and the Bach Prize at the ECU Young Artists Organ Competition, 1st Prize at the Columbia AGO Competition for Young Organists, and 1st Prize and Audience Prize at the Sursa American Organ Competition (HS Division). As the recipient of a 2023 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship, Daniel had the opportunity to perform on the great organs of Paris during the French Organ Music Seminar this past summer.

Also an accomplished pianist, Daniel has been a prize winner at numerous competitions, including the American Protégé Piano Competition, the Steinway Junior Piano Competition, and The American Prize Lorin Hollander Concerto Competition. In 2022, he made his Severance Hall debut with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, performing Nikolai Kapustin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. He has performed Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Euclid Symphony Orchestra, a work he has also performed with the Lakeland Civic Orchestra and the Suburban Symphony Orchestra. An avid collaborative pianist and chamber musician, his Meraki Trio was awarded 1st Place at the inaugural Glass City Chamber Music Competition last year and was selected to compete in the 2023 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

Diagnosed with stage IV cancer as an infant, exposure to music as cognitive therapy, combined with his love of sound, unleashed Daniel’s passion for the piano at age 5 and the organ at age 10. He continues to actively promote the benefits of classical music and has helped raise thousands of dollars for non-profit organizations that support music education and music therapy.

When not making music, Daniel enjoys programming, learning foreign languages, and the company of his calico cat, Imogene.

Kelsey Ferguson

Director of Music for Children and Youth

Kelsey graduated from CIM in May with a MA in violin performance. This summer, she will be playing in the New Hampshire Music Festival. Kelsey has been the intern for our children and youth choirs for the past 2 years. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s and grew up singing in our choirs. She is familiar with our music program and our families. She took conducting classes at CIM and continues to study the craft.

His mother Ruth was Parish Secretary at St Christopher’s by-the-river in Gates Mills and ran the nursery school there for 30 years. David played the 8-bell chime there before it became a 23-bell carillon. He studied organ at St. Paul’s with Walter Blodgett, later with Marilyn Mason at University of Michigan where he also studied carillon with Percival Price. David has been carillonneur at St. Pauls since 1990 and by day he is a private piano teacher. He is a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA).

Pledges are our largest source of annual funding. A pledge is an estimate for what a household plans to give financially over the course of the current year. Pledges are most helpful because they make it possible for Saint Paul’s to make a budget for the year.
