Each summer, St. Paul’s youth spend a week working on the construction or repair of homes in or near Harlan County, Kentucky.
Our purpose is to meet the people, learn about the culture of eastern Kentucky, and understand the conditions that contribute to the abiding poverty in this part of Appalachia. We also focus on creating a strong community over the week, as we live out our faith in service to those less fortunate. We know that our hearts and minds are strengthened and transformed as we receive through service much more than we can ever give.
Groups work Monday through Friday from about 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We take one afternoon off to spend at the local beach, go sightseeing and hiking, or just relax. There are opportunities for a variety of skill levels. Workers can expect projects ranging from painting, laying insulation, hauling, and demolition to roofing, carpentry, and finish work.
