About Evensong
Since the late middle ages “evensong” has been the popular name for vespers, one of the eight daily offices still observed in monastic communities. The Anglican “Evening Prayer” service appeared in the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549 and is found on page 61 of our current BCP. When this prayer service is sung instead of said, it is called “Evensong.” The chants used in the service have their roots in ancient Hebrew rites.

Many composers throughout the centuries have written choral music for Evening Prayer texts, most particularly the "Magnificat" ("The Song of Mary") and "Nunc Dimittis" ("The Song of Simeon"). These inspired settings form a rich heritage of music rarely heard outside the service of Choral Evensong.

About Advent Lessons & Carols
A gem of the Anglican choral tradition, this service leads us into the season of light and expectation, featuring readings for Advent and anthems by the Senior, Children’s, Youth and Handbell Choirs of St. Paul’s Church. A handbell prelude begins at 4:30 p.m. Lessons and Carols begin at 5 p.m.
